What Is a Globe Valve?

Introduction

In industrial piping systems, valves are not only responsible for opening and closing media flow, but also directly affect system stability and control accuracy. Among them, the Globe Valve is widely used in petroleum, chemical, power generation, marine, and other industries due to its excellent throttling performance and reliable sealing capability.

1. What Is a Globe Valve?

A Globe Valve, also known as a spherical valve, gets its name from the early spherical shape of its valve body. It is a valve that controls or shuts off fluid flow by moving the disc linearly along the centerline of the valve seat.

Inside the valve body, there is a partition positioned at a certain angle to the flow passage (commonly called the “throat”). As fluid flows through the valve, it changes direction, creating a relatively large pressure drop. This design also gives the globe valve excellent throttling and regulating characteristics.

2. Structure of a Globe Valve

Valve Body: Withstands internal pressure and connects to the pipeline.

Bonnet: Seals with the valve body and houses the stem and packing.

Disc (Valve Plug): Works together with the seat for sealing and flow regulation.

Stem: Transfers operating force and drives the disc up and down.

Valve Seat: Fixed sealing surface.

Handwheel or Actuator: Drives the stem to rotate or move vertically.

3. Working Principle of a Globe Valve

  • When the handwheel rotates clockwise, the stem drives the disc downward through the threaded mechanism, gradually approaching the valve seat. As the gap between the disc and seat decreases, the flow passage area becomes smaller, allowing flow regulation until complete shutoff is achieved. Rotating in the opposite direction opens the valve.
  • This linear motion creates a relatively predictable relationship between flow rate and disc travel, making globe valves especially suitable for precise flow regulation applications.
  • Inside the valve body, the fluid usually flows in an “S”-shaped path: entering from the inlet, flowing around the partition, passing upward or downward through the seat area, and finally exiting through the outlet. Although this structure results in a certain amount of pressure drop, it is precisely this design that gives the globe valve its superior throttling capability.

4. Features and Disadvantages of Globe Valves

Item Features Disadvantages
Fluid Control Strong regulating capability: Linear relationship between travel and flow rate provides excellent throttling and flow control performance. High flow resistance: Multiple flow direction changes create much higher pressure loss than gate valves or ball valves.
Sealing Performance Reliable sealing: Uniform force distribution between disc and seat ensures tight shutoff with low leakage. Directional installation required: Usually installed with flow entering from below and exiting above. Reverse installation may cause damage.
Durability & Maintenance Wear-resistant and easy to repair: Sealing surfaces can be reinforced, and disc/seat replacement or online maintenance is convenient. High operating torque: Large sizes or high-pressure applications require greater operating force.
Structure & Application Short stroke: Faster opening and closing time with relatively simple structure. Limited large-size applications: Large diameter valves are heavy and expensive, usually used only for small and medium pipe sizes.

5. Typical Applications and Unsuitable Scenarios of Globe Valves

(1) Power and Energy Industry

Steam systems: Boiler blowdown lines, steam distribution headers, and pipelines before steam trap groups that require stable flow regulation.

(2) Petroleum, Chemical, and Natural Gas Industry

Process control: Reactor inlet and outlet control, reflux regulation in distillation towers, and transportation of acid and alkali media.

Petroleum

(3) Civil and General Industrial Applications

Water supply and cooling water systems: Applications requiring flow regulation rather than simple on/off control.

Fuel oil systems: Fuel oil regulation before boiler burners.

Cooling water

Unsuitable Applications

  • High energy consumption systems: Excessive flow resistance makes it unsuitable for main pipelines requiring low pressure drop and high flow velocity.
  • Large diameter pipelines: Sizes above DN250 become extremely heavy, expensive, and require very high operating torque.
  • Viscous or crystallizing media: The internal “S”-shaped flow path can easily become clogged or accumulate impurities.
  • Bidirectional flow systems: Requires one-way installation (flow entering from below and exiting above), making it unsuitable for frequently changing flow directions.

6. FAQ

1. What is the main difference between a Globe Valve and a Gate Valve?

A Globe Valve is suitable for flow regulation but has a higher pressure drop, while a Gate Valve is mainly designed for full open/full close applications with minimal pressure loss.

2. Why must the flow direction be “flow in from below and out from above”?

This installation method improves sealing performance, reduces operating torque, and protects the packing. Reverse installation may lead to internal leakage.

3. Can a Globe Valve be used as a shutoff valve?

Yes. It provides reliable sealing, but even in the fully open position there is still a relatively high pressure drop. If only shutoff is required without frequent regulation, ball valves or gate valves are usually better choices.

4. How can you tell if the sealing surface is damaged?

Signs include downstream leakage after closing, unstable flow regulation, abnormal noise, or vibration during shutoff.
